A Guide to Opponent Profiling and Tells in Texas Hold'em Poker
The game of poker is based on processing incomplete information. One's ability to efficiently and correctly make heads or tails with whatever little information their opponents give them will often spell Texas Hold'em success or disaster.
Opponent profiling is a key Texas Hold'em poker strategy. It involves observing both the physical and game behavior of opponents, in order to know what their tendencies in playing their hands are.
Observing the physical and game behavior involves many things, but what one wants to watch for are tells. Tells are the obvious changes in a player's behavior that may evoke a sense of what their cards are.
Think about it: in order to successfully do an opponent profiling, what you should see are not the constant behaviors of players, but the deviations from these constant behavior. For example, if the player talks a lot, and they suddenly fall silent, then something must be going on with their cards.
Another common tell new poker players often make is that they peek at their hand when the flop is dealt. This is a telling sign that they might have a drawing hand. Shaking hands and sweaty foreheads are more examples of tells that are obvious.
However, do not think that opponent profiling is this simple. A successful opponent profiling is not solely based on physical behavior, but more importantly, on game behavior.
Look at the betting tendencies of players. How much are they risking? If they are risking more than what they could win, it probably means that they mean business. However, if that same player has not shown the same risk when they had a strong hand before, they are most probably bluffing.
Also keenly observe the fold-or-flop tendencies of your opponents. Which hands are they most likely to keep? Are they tight players and play only the best hands? If so, then if they start playing with an unfavorable board, then you might want to suspect their actions.
Keep in mind that experienced players will most often fake a physical tell. Professional Texas Hold'em poker players will sometimes take the time to act, just to evoke a strong hand and lure you into folding. Thus, it is better to look at tells based on game behavior.
Remember that the most successful Texas Hold'em poker players are those that could perform opponent profiling successfully and efficiently. Read tells that are not only based on physical behavior, but on game behavior. By doing so, you will easily play your way into the pot.
